Gangsta Granny |
Another hilarious and moving novel from David Walliams, number one bestseller and fastest growing children’s author in the country.
A story of prejudice and acceptance, funny lists and silly words, this new book has all the hallmarks of David’s previous bestsellers.
Our hero Ben is bored beyond belief after he is made to stay at his grandma’s house. She’s the boringest grandma ever: all she wants to do is to play Scrabble, and eat cabbage soup. But there are two things Ben doesn’t know about his grandma.
1) She was once an international jewel thief.
2) All her life, she has been plotting to steal the Crown Jewels, and now she needs Ben’s help…

this review is by my 9 year old as this is his buy. it was a good book though the beginning is a bit boring, it has a good plot and it is also funny. if i had to rate it on 10 i would say 9, as in the middle of the book i found a very unclear part.I also don't get a part where the boys grandma gets many fake diamonds. But it was a good book which keeps your eyes glued to it throughout. An example of this is his parents love ballroom dancing but he hates it [i mean the boy] but he acts as if he likes it so that he can go to his grandmas house [he hates her in the beginning] but then his parents sign him up for a ballroom dancing competition where he wears a suit with heart designs all around it and dances like a monkey with his tail on fire. So rounding it of the boy hated his grandma and she tries to make him spend more time with her by doing a great robbery which they cannot fail. A good way to spend a sunday afternoon.
At the recommendation of a cousin in England, we tracked down some David Walliams books, and Gangsta Granny was the first we read. I read this to my 8 year old son and we both got a kick out of the characters and the plot twists and the irreverent and saucy language. David Walliams reminds me a lot of Roald Dahl which is high praise. David Walliams is our new favorite author! (It's worth noting that some of the language is British English and not American English so we had to figure some things out from the context, but it wasn't a major issue and led to some fun conversations about the differences in the two languages.) We're now reading Awful Auntie and are enjoying it as much as Gangsta Granny!
My kid loves this book. He keeps it on the back seat and reads it over and over again. Often times he rehashes "jokes" or scenes from the book while I drive around.
This is a wild and crazy story with a heartwarming message. I liked the corny sense of humor, the lovely characters in the story and the theme of love and belonging which leaves you with a warm feeling long after finishing the book. I think this would suit children from as low as 6 years up to 12. I am a grown up (though my wife sometimes says otherwise) and I enjoyed it thoroughly.
