A unique children's activity book by award-winning illustrator Sara Fanelli, whose experimental, collage-based style is frequently imitated but never bettered.

"The Onion's Great Escape is no ordinary children's story. Tear along perforated lines and each beautifully-drawn page peels away; by the last page, the book - by Italian illustrator Sara Fanelli - folds into an onion. More alluring in real life than it sounds, and no smell."-The Independent Saturday Magazine "A new conceptual activity book by artist Sara Fanelli, from Phaidon Press, is an absolute surprise. Not only because it's a marvelous work of quirky design, offbeat collage, and whimsical paper engineering, but also because of the unexpected philosophical questions and imagination stretching exercises it asks kids to engage in."-apartmenttherapy.com "A truly unique idea from Sara Fanelli: an activity book like no other. There are thought-provoking questions to answer and the reader needs to think, then write, draw or doodle their ideas. At the end, by pressing out pieces of the book, they will have a beautiful paper onion."-The Bookseller "Possibly the most remarkable children's book I've ever seen, a combination of philosophy and origami (yes, really) that urges young readers to 'think about what you know, not just what you've been taught'... Astonishing."-ABC magazine "Genius."-The Sunday Telegraph "The book is wonderful for those reluctant readers who need to get their hands into their work. Clear illustrations show how to pull the onion from the book and turn it into a toy. When the "engineer" is done with the book, he or she will end up with a colorful, non-smelling (!) onion friend."-San Francisco Book Review "A cross between illustration, philosophy, and paper engineering... The Onion's Great Escape challenges the limitations of reading as an interactive experience."-Cool Hunting

A wonderfully innovative and imaginative book. A collectible. Both kids and adults should enjoy having this book in their library.

My son loves the story and Sara Fanelli's illusration. I and my son enjoy her great creation with the funny story!

Beautiful book! A must have.

This book is very unique. Reminiscent of Dahl or Carroll. I originally purchased it since I'm an elementary school art teacher, and I love adding artistic new books to my classroom library. This book isn't really the "read aloud" type ( as in the kind you would read to a large group of children). It poses many interesting questions to the reader, promoting creativity and divergent thinking, prompting the reader to write into the book, leaving lines and spaces to record musings. The format is almost like an artistic journal, or altered book, and it is really very beautiful, with a lovely unique and vintage-inspired color palette, full of vivid pinks, creams and chartreuse! I thought this book may be a great "project" to complete with a child or siblings, over the years as they are growing up. The questions could be used as conversation starters or even journal prompts, and may be adapted for larger groups of children as well. Some questions are simple, like "What is the longest minute you can remember?" and some more complex, "What would change your life the most, if you looked different or had a different memory?" It is also hand written, some words are in cursive, some in all caps, which may be an issue for younger readers. The "pop-out" onion is a joy, but will require patient hands and adult supervision, if you care about the integrity of the book, but the pages are thick and the paper beautiful and high-quality. I preferred to leave the onion intact in my copy, but my husband was eager to try to get it out! I can see this book being a great gift for an introspective child, or used to promote critical thinking skills.

I love this book! But I can't bring myself to punch out the onion!!! Great concept!
