The Annotated Brothers Grimm (The Bicentennial Edition)

Celebrate the 200th birthday of the Brothers Grimm stories with this lavish volume now richly expanded for a new generation.

Publication of the Grimms’ Children’s Stories and Household Tales in 1812 brought the great European oral folk tradition into print for the first time. The Annotated Brothers Grimm returns in a deluxe and augmented 200th-anniversary edition commemorating that landmark event. Adding to such favorites as “Cinderella,” “Little Red Riding Hood,” “Snow White,” and “Rapunzel,” Maria Tatar includes six new entries, among them “Four Clever Brothers,” “The Water of Life,” “The White Snake,” and “The Old Man and His Grandson.” The expanded edition features an enhanced selection of illustrations, many in color, by legendary artists such as George Cruikshank and Arthur Rackham; annotations that explore the historical origins, cultural context, and psychological effects of the tales; and a biographical essay on Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. A perennial favorite in the acclaimed Norton Annotated series, this magnificent volume will draw both children and adults into the enchanting world of fairy tales. 75 color, 75 black-and-white illustrations

It's a beautiful book with quality paper and illustrations. It's perfect for just the fairy tales. The annotation is useless, though. Annotation is supposed to give you historical context, not shaky interpretations of symbolism for pages and pages.

For example, the big bad wolf falls into a well and drowns. The annotation: "The destroyer of life who devours children is returned to the waters, to the source of life. The tale, which tells of death and rebirth, has been read as an allegory of the perpetual renewal of life."

It just seems like filler to me, like some student trying to fill the word quota for an essay when they got nothing. However there are some interesting details in the annotation when the writer is focused on history.

I've always want to know the truth about some of the fairy tails I've heard as a kid. it seems that most were watered down from the original writings. i guess this was done so as to not scare the crud. Well, this book tells the whole story. A large book that contains several of the classics, like Hansel and Gretel and Cinderella, and some not so classic like The White Snake. A large, heavy and nicely illustrated in black and white sketches. The best thing about this book is that it is annotated, so you get lots of great information and links to other stories and myths. Great edition and well worth the price. Not for kids, just us big kids.

I've heard the annotator on NPR (Terry Gross's Fresh Air). The woman is more knowledgable on fairy tales than any of us has to be. Hence the book is a treat. We're all seeing these stories everywhere in pop culture. I've seen how they pop up in less known but still interesting works (Middleton's "Grimm's Last Fairy Tale", Anfuso's "Oz House"). Those works and this one mutually re-enforce each other. They are richer when you read these. These old tales are renewed when you read theirs. The fairy tale is not a static thing. it wasn't meant to be. i find this book gives us a sense of the living fairy/folk tradition! Oz House; Grimm's Last Fairytale: A Novel

This is a beautifully put together book. It is large and gorgeous, with charming illustrations from past illustrators of this seminal work. The stories are lightly annotated which adds to the richness and the tales themselves are from the Brother's Grimm, not some hoo-ha who thinks it's necessary to pull out "the bad parts". I have read several versions of this work and this is one of the best. Get it for your children get it for yourself . . . it will transport you into an altered world that is instantly recognizable.
