As someone who is new to comics, I was faced with this daunting task of figuring out where to start. Do I go back to the 60s and wade through fifty years of Marvel comics, facing innumerous alternative universes? Do I read through Wikipedia and jump in at some random point and hope for the best? Are there Sparknotes for this??
Upon the recommendation of one of my better-read friends, I picked up a copy of Thor: Season One, and I was not disappointed. This telling of Thor's tale is a bit of a new spin on a familiar plot, so I think old fans will appreciate the nod to Marvel's history; that being said, it does present itself in a more modern light, and we see more of Thor's personality than perhaps would be seen in his earlier runs. There is great characterization throughout the cast, which includes the usual Aesir and Humans.
The artwork is fantastic, stylized in a way that doesn't alienate readers in an attempt at modernity and edginess. There's a great dynamic between panels that adds to the experience, drawing the reader in and enhancing the plot. Per the norm there is concept art and extra tidbits at the end of the book, which I personally always enjoy.
Overall, I would recommend this comic to those who are just starting into the world of Marvel Comics, old fans of Thor who are looking to come back, or those who never left and just flat-out love Thor.
This isn't a complete reboot. It mainly modernised the original story that was started in Journey into Mystery all those years ago. Thankfully they did lose the rock creatures invading from Saturn. But they kept the whole Odin sending Thor to Earth as mortal Don Blake to learn humility. It brings in a lot of elements that took a while to be introduced the first time around. Mainly things dealing with Asgard.
We get to see the Warriors Three and other Asgardians. The giants are also there. I like how it sets up the rivalry between Thor and Loki. In fact, I enjoyed the whole treatment of Asgard and all of those who dwell there.
I enjoyed the look of the graphic novel as well.
My only question is when did comics (and other books) start having seasons?
While the overall story varies greatly from Thor's actual origin in the comics, this is a fun tale. I can see some of the old timers struggling with the differences, but I think the essence of the characters are represented well. The artwork is outstanding. I definitely recommend this book.
One of the better season one books from Marvel. Does a nice job of updating the Thor origin.
In short, if you're a marvel comics reader, it's worth your time.
it was a good story , stuck to the original very well, ink work was great . I think the cut-a-ways could have been better, but great story
