* "A feel-good ride, full of droll artistic asides and an abundance of caring.... In his first outing as an author, Campbell shines." (Kirkus Reviews, starred review)
"Campbell’s simply outlined watercolors exude warmth, emotion, and sly humor, from the deadpan expressions of several surprised recipients of the Hug Machine’s hugs to his own serenely closed eyes during each hug, which make it clear that he’s giving each hug his utmost." (Publishers Weekly)
"The noodle-armed little boy who loves hugs is irrepressibly charming....delightfully rendered, and the hug machine’s enthusiasm for friendliness is hard not to love." (Booklist)
"Absolutely irresistable." (School Library Journal)
*"Whether for bedtime or storytime, affectionate kids and adults will thoroughly embrace (ahem) this fuzzy and goofy paean to cuddling." (The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books, STARRED REVIEW)
"a non-sappy, warm-hearted ending to a book that feels just like a big ol’ hug" (The Horn Book Magazine November/December 2014)

超可爱画风,暖心故事
书到的时候侧面有点磕破了,没有塑封,内容很赞!平面的画风,有趣
Honest confession: we bought this book because one day or LO staring coming home and yelling "I'm the hug machine" and running at us full force laughing hysterically and giving HUGE hugs. Any book that does that is a win in my book. It is a very cute story and a nice message. My only wish is that they had uses a healthy food instead of pizza as what he likes to eat though that is a small price to pay for such an engaging story that obviously has a lot of power and resonance with the little ones. I saw one of the teachers read this book to the group during snack when I was picking up my LO one day and almost every kid went up and hugged him when he was done reading. How incredibly sweet. How could you not want this book in your collection?
This book is so special to me. I honestly haven't found many books (since my own childhood) that really resonate with me. This one did. I saw it while visiting the Strand bookstore in NYC and read through it. It's a very simple story about a boy that hugs everyone and everything- from people, to animals, to food, to inanimate objects. I think I loved this so much because I, too, am a hugger. I sadly didn't have money to buy it on the spot but was thrilled when I opened it up as a present for the holidays. It sits on my shelf where I can see it at all times. I read it to everyone that comes over. Come on, it's adorable and takes only a few minutes to read! Even my 13 year old niece appreciated it and we know how difficult teenagers are to please. This year, I bought it for my nephew. We live in different states but during a visit there, I was able to read this to him as his bedtime story. He loved it. I hope that he continues to love it as much as I do.
I bought this book for my 16-month-old daughter, Claire, even though it is listed for older kids because Claire LOVES her books, and because I have always loved Scott Campbell's art (I'm a big fan of Double Fine Games, and of Scott's art in Psychonauts in particular). On our first readthrough, Claire was already pointing to various objects and animals, and smiling at the beautiful, silly illustrations. Amazon lists the age range for Hug Machine as 4-8, but Claire really responds to it - she loves hugs, and seems to understand and enjoy this hug-centric adventure. The only drawback so far is that struggles to turn the pages herself (and she doesn't let anybody else turn them for her!) - I would have loved to purchase this as a board book! This is really a trivial gripe, however, and does nothing to take away from the quality of this fun, silly story.
Final Thoughts:
Pros: Beautiful, silly illustrations, and a sweet hug-centric story perfect for even the littlest readers.
Cons: None (except that I would have loved the option of a board-book version!)
Recommended Age: 1-7
My grandsons had a "hug machine" under their bed to re-supply when their hugs were getting low, so when I saw this book, I simply could not pass it up. The risk paid off. The boys are aged 2, 4, and 7 years and all three of them really like this book. The illustrations are loaded with details to talk about and the expressions on some of the "hug-ees" are priceless. So, if you are worried that the pink cover means this is a "girly" book- forgettaboutit! (ps I am not sure how my daughter feels about multiple readings of this book, but she seemed to enjoy it when the boys had me read it the other night. =)
We originally checked this book out from the library but love it so much we bought our own copy. It's silly and fun but also shows that hugging is a good thing! Everyone deserves a hug- even the hug machine himself. There is a page where the hug machine (he little boy) gets refueled and ready for hugging action. Our son (20 months) loves when we hug him during the hugging parts of the books. It's just enough text but will be a favorite for awhile.
