NO SPOILERS!!! My husband first read this book in German, while living in Germany. He had seen the movie when he was little and thought the book might be as entertaining. Well not only was it entertaining, but it was so much better than the movie. He loved the book so much that he bought an English version for me and told me that I had to read it. This book is unlike anything else I've ever read, its a story within a story. The magical world that Michael Ende creates is captivating. The characters are well thought out, and it's hard not to fall in love with them. We are now reading this to our little children and they are enjoying it just as much as we did. I highly recommend reading this story, by yourself, or to your children.
As an avid reader, I can honestly say that this is one of my all-time favorite books. The story is compelling and well-written, and as I read it I got very attached to the characters. If you like the movie, you should read the book that it is based on. The book is very different from the movie in a lot of ways, especially since the movie ended the story about halfway through the book. If you didn't like the movie, I strongly recommend reading the book anyway because as I mentioned before, they are very different in many ways. This is a children's book to be sure, but in the same way that The Hobbit is a children's book. It's written for a child audience, but it is still a masterpiece that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. If you enjoy fantasy stories, this is one book that you should read in your life.
The story is fantastic and even though its vocabulary and the narrative is truly intended for older kids my 6 year old daughter asks me to read it to her every night. I consider this a must read book for everyone.
About this edition. Priced under what a medium latte goes for these days, this is a very affordable edition so I can't complain. It's light and the cover has a nice texture to it. However, the low price comes at the cost of the dual color printing of the original edition (as the story unfolds in both the real world and Fantastica, the original had green letters for one world and reddish letters for the other world, so having all black letters takes a bit away from the atmosphere). Ultimately there is no real harm done and black lettering may be better for some eyes; but if the colored printing is important for you, look at another edition.
This is a great story for children and adults too.
The book arrived promptly considering I live in the UK.
I ordered the hardcover version and I can confirm that this has the red and green writing which is important. Here where I live it is difficult to find an edition that has this feature. I think the different color writing is very important - without giving any spoilers it is an important 'aha!' moment when you realise why the words have different colors. I would encourage others to seek out an edition which has this feature.
The Neverending Story was always a beloved movie for me as a child, I loved the land of Fantasia and Falkor, Atreyu and of course Bastian. Yes, the book is wholly different from the movie. I would say that the book would equal the first and second movies as far as storyline goes, and yet, they still are drastically different and on a whole the book is a lot darker. The movie still remains a favorite for me, and I love the book, neither one ruined the other for me, I just love both in different ways.
From the childhood memories, the story progresses as a young boy, who doesn't seem to fit in, discovers a mystical world inside a magical book and all Bastians various adventures unfold. As an adult I see this novel as a story of what happens when we lie to ourselves and how those lies can change us and those around us. We can see this in the conversation that Gmorg has with Atreyu as the nothing circles them. I can also see the underlining moral of 'be who you are' and 'love yourself' inside this book as well. After all the wishes Bastians makes to be something grand and strong, fearless, handsome and brave, he realizes he just wants to be loved for who he is, faults and all. It is only until Bastian realizes these things that he can return to his world but he had to take a dark path to come to that realization.
The Neverending Story means many things to many people, and this classic will always have a place in my heart.
