Eloise's Mother's Day Surprise |
Kay Thompson (1909-1998) was a singer, dancer, vocal arranger, and coach of many MGM musicals in the 1940s.
The Eloise character grew out of the voice of a precocious six-year-old that Miss Thompson put on to amuse her friends. Collaborating with Hilary Knight on what was an immediate bestseller, Kay Thompson became a literary sensation when Eloise was published in 1955. The book has sold more than two million copies to date. Kay Thompson and Hilary Knight created four more Eloise books, Eloise in Paris, Eloise at Christmas, Eloise in Moscow, and Eloise Takes a Bawth.^Hilary Knight, son of artist-writers Clayton Knight and Katharine Sturges, was educated at the Art Students League, where he studied with Reginald Marsh. Besides the Eloise books, Hilary Knight has illustrated more than fifty books for children, six of which he wrote himself.
He lives and works in New York City, not far from The Plaza Hotel.

I purchased several books about mother's day and I won't even put this in my classroom. I hardly ever write reviews but I needed to for this one. The whole book is about a shopping spree for the mother. It's all about consumerism which makes it completely shallow. They use name brands like Godiva in the book (nice that they have product placement in a book for kids!) Each time she goes to another fifth avenue store she says, "Mom needs the BEST BEST BEST!" The book ends with the shopping spree ending- the mother doesn't even appear in the book at all! The whole book is just about buy over priced items- not a good message about mother's day at all.
nice
My daughter also picked this book from the library. Just like the other reviewers had pointed out, this book is so shallow. As I was reading this book, half way thru, I was hoping that the story is going to end with the little girl learning a lesson that material stuff is not what her mother wanted. It was the love from her or something that she made personally, or ANYTHING else than the BEST BEST BEST stuff from the designer stores(Godiva, Saks Fifth Ave and Tiffanys). But no, that didn't happen. The story ended with her giving a flower and chocolate to her nanny who went on a shopping spree with her. This book shouldn't even be at the library.
My daughter checked this one out from the library. Eloise goes shopping (with her nanny) for Mother's Day gifts. But her mother can only have the "BEST BEST BEST" in name brand gifts: Godiva chocolates, a ring from Tiffany, and something from Saks Fifth Avenue. My four year old does not know these brands, nor do I want her to know them. So ridiculous! In the end, she gives one flower and one box of chocolates to her nanny, and they imply that the mother is somewhere far, far away as they are mailing the gifts to her. Ugh!
I found myself upset reading this book. It discusses a shopping spree for a mother (whom is not present at any point in the story) involving high end brands listed by name "Godvia" "Tiffany's" "Saks" because they're the "BEST BEST BEST". As you read, (and cringe), you hope the moral is coming. But, it never comes. Do not buy this book.
