Essay:
Nowadays, employers may pay special attention to the “skills” section to determine who should move on to the next step of the hiring process. As a job seeker, it is important to highlight one’s professional qualifications and social skills to position oneself as a well-rounded candidate. Employers are looking to hire employees who have the right mix of professional qualifications as hard skills and social skills as soft skills.
On the one hand, hard skills are most important to the job. They include the expertise necessary for an individual to successfully do the job; and they are job-specific, of course. That is why hard skills, rather than soft skills, are always listed in job postings and job descriptions. And that is also why certifications and licenses are perfect for proving to potential employers who will see if job seekers possess particular sought-after knowledge and abilities that are learned through education or training. First thing first, putting the related hard skills on one’s resume is essential. Without them, landing an interview or even getting past applicant tracking systems will become next to impossible. After all, in the job market, nothing can beat the importance of hard skills.
Soft skills, on the other hand, are emotional abilities that can be applied in any job, and that are useful for an individual to stand out among other job applicants. While hard skills are usually teachable, actually soft skills are those personality traits which are related to emotions that are harder to develop. And this partly explains why soft skills are extremely valuable to many employers these days. Indeed, such emotional traits are so valuable that almost every employer looks for job candidates who are skilled in identifying emotions, using emotions, and regulating emotions. With good soft skills, one is able to connect emotionally with one’s co-workers, clients and superiors as one will look and feel more comfortable and therefore more confident and efficient in job situations.
In conclusion, the two types of skills are not the opposite but instead they are the unique intersection of both. It is neither the triumph of hard skills over soft skills, nor vice verse. So far as employability is concerned, there is no “either/or” question since the answer must necessarily be both.
