  Topic:

Team/group activities can teach more important skills for life than those activities which are played alone. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

  Essay:

As a means to learn a set of basic life kills, which of these two approaches is more important? Some prefer to play activities by themselves while others enjoy collaborating as part of a group. For that question, the best answer may be some sort of blend in most cases.

To begin with, are individual sports better than team sports when it comes to learning life skills? It depends on one’s preference and what life skill is wanted in a sport—self-reliance, responsibility, intrinsic motivation, and the feeling of being comfortable. For one thing, those activities that are played alone can develop a life skill of self-reliance in young people. In addition, since one’s success is entirely dependent on one’s own efforts, this implies a life skill of being responsible for one’s own actions and decisions. Further, playing alone teaches one to motivate oneself as there is no team pressure to improve and there is nobody to blame for failure. This intrinsic motivation as a life skill is perhaps more powerful than external motivation in a team. Further still, individual sports can teach one how to feel comfortable in front of other people, which is nonetheless a life skill that can come in hand for work presentation later in life.

Group activities in general and sports in particular can teach at least four life skills that young people can take with them forever. Firstly, the social aspect of group activities might be what entices young people to play in the first place. That is to say, youth sports participation lets them spend time with peers in a learning environment while practicing social skills that are likely to last a lifetime. Secondly, fair-play behavior is a lesson that can be taught since youngsters can learn to positively handle both the winning and losing outcome of playing a sport. This means that good sportsmanship is a trait that carries over from youth-hood to adulthood. Thirdly, although there is such a thing as being too competitive, it is essential to also understand the positive value of competition. Fourthly, having the 100% discipline to play as a team day after day in sports will as well help them give 100% life skill in whatever else they do in the future.

All in all, mixtures of team activities and individual activities, as illustrated in sports, can join forces to teach essential life skills that best benefit young people. Whatever one’s preference, both kinds of activities are being played, although to varying extents. Each kind may have the other in mind when teaching important life skills.
