  IELTS Writing Task 2

  China (Guangzhou) 2018-08-31

  Topic:

Some people think that a sense of competition in children should be encouraged. Others believe that children who are taught to co-operate rather than compete become more useful adults. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

  Essay:

Should children be taught that competition and cooperation are two different things? And is it better to encourage them to learn to compete or to cooperate? Competition is often considered to be the opposite of cooperation, however in the real world, mixtures of competition and cooperation are the norm.

On the one hand, for children to become more useful adults, a sense of competition has been shown to be useful to a certain point, and no further. From an early age, they need to learn how to strive to win something or be more successful than others. A little competition can be good for children because competitive activities help them develop important skills they will use well into adulthood. For example, children who engage in competition earn critical skills, while learning the value of hard work and self-efficacy, and all these will help them grow up to become useful members of society. Clearly, the intense spirit of competition in children is derived from the inner satisfaction of knowing that they have done their best and that they have gotten the most out of what they have to give. At the bottom line, “competition “ is a rude motivation, and yet an effective one; therefore a sense of competition in children should be encouraged.

On the other hand, the intense spirit of competition in children must be tempered with strong desire for cooperation. It is because not only does competition place too much pressure on children to be the best but it can also cause unnecessary stress and let them be disappointed if they do not measure up. Being a higher moral principle than competition, perhaps cooperation is the thing children should strive for today so that they will become useful citizens later in life. Therefore, they should be taught how to work in a group to the same end, and how to begin cooperation where competition leaves off. As well, they should realize that, in most cases, it is through cooperation, rather than competition, that their greatest successes will be achieved. For example, many cooperative games at school teach children to solve problems as a team and help them learn the lifelong skills of working together for the common success of the group.

To sum up, people need to understand that the real world is normally mixed with competition and cooperation. As children, they begin learning how to compete and how to cooperate in different situations. Later in life, they are likely to become useful adults.

Some people think that children should learn how to compete, but others think that children should be taught to co-operate to become more useful adults.
