At what age are children ready for school? There is much debate about when the transition between play-based preschool and the start of formal schooling should begin. For different benefits, the formal school starting age varies from country, meaning children can be as young as four to five or as old as six to seven.
Some people believe that “earlier is better”. It is because starting primary school sooner not only will enable children to achieve better academic results later but also will help parents organize their time. On the one hand, children who receive formal instructions at four to five years old will hold advantages over those who start school at six to seven. Among other benefits, formal education as young as possible can supply a good foundation for existent acquisition for immature children, promote them to form their ideas, communicate and socialize with other people, and develop their knowledge. On the other hand, it may be possible for parents to return to the workforce earlier and reduce childcare costs. Besides, parents may also feel that starting school earlier gives a child a head start and a better chance of performing better in later schooling.
Other people, however, argue that there are negative consequences from forcing children to engage with formal instruction at too early an age. With good evidence, this argument calls for an extension of informal, play-based preschool provision and for the start of formal schooling to be delayed until the age of six to seven. If children are brought into school very young and then they are asked to behave in ways they cannot, they may become naughty children and problem children. For that matter, it is increasingly evident that many of inattentive behaviors could stem from starting school too early. Understanding the emotional harm caused by starting formal learning at five or six years old, the evidence for a later start is persuasive. In the interests of children’s academic achievements and emotional well-being, this evidence should be taken seriously.
In conclusion, although some people think that children should start formal schooling at four to five, others believe that it should be delayed until six to seven. The decision depends on each country’s primary-school educational policy. In many parts of the world, this issue continues to be debatable as to which policy is more likely to pay off.
