Essay:
As people become more and more connected as a society, human relationships are evolving in a mixed positive and negative development, thanks to a technological tool of the Internet. One of the great debates about the Internet is what it is doing to the relationships people make. Truly, it has affected the types of relationships that people make, more for better than for worse.
Some people fear that the Internet, through various apps and sites, removes part of human touch, when it comes to interacting with friends and family. The fear that relationships are affected by information technology is partly justified because humans are social animals that love to have contact face to face. Sometimes, people just need a gentle smile, a heart-felt hug, a warm handshake or a loving pat on the back, all of which could not be replaced simply by ‘stickers’ and ‘emojis’ and ‘smileys’ , however cute those symbols might be. Paradoxically, whereas the Internet connects people electronically, it disconnects them from each other emotionally. It may seem too obvious to mention, but nobody would deny the fact that going out to dinner with friends and family is different from spending several days in back-and forth texting online. Therefore, it is for worse that technology has changed the way people interact with each other in relationships people make.
However, research is showing that the Internet is not destroying relationships. On the contrary, the Internet is enabling people to maintain existing ties, often to strengthen them, and at times to forge new ties. Indeed, no time is actually wasted as the time that most people spend online reduces the time they spend on the relatively unsocial activities of watching TV and sleeping. Moreover, much of the online communication takes place with the same types of friends and family who are also contacted in person. Apart from that, people can now communicate with each other across the ocean at the click of a finger tip at three in the morning and not wake up their friends and family. Accordingly, technology is for better when it brings people together via the Internet that extends human relationships of many types as if in ‘a global village’.
In conclusion, it is true that the way many people interact with each other has changed due to technology, but this development is more positive than negative. Of course, the debate will continue regarding what the Internet is doing to relationships people make. Anyway, the Internet is neutral, depending on how people use it.
