Essay:
Be they the best teachers or the worst teachers, parents in some countries have the right to home-educate, so their children may not have been previously enrolled at school. Why do many people choose home-education when public schooling is usually better for children from a very early age? For that matter, parents who want to teach their children at home should consider the positive and negative aspects of home education.
There are five main advantages about teaching children at home, if parents are by chance the best teachers. Firstly, parents can determine the curriculum and their children’s study schedule and adapt teaching techniques best suiting how their children learn. Secondly, by not sending children to school, parents can shelter children from school violence and other undesirable behaviors that children in public schools frequently encounter. Thirdly, on their own parents can demonstrate that education is fun at home and provide their children with the personal interaction that teachers in large classrooms are not able to offer. Fourthly, parents can spend extra time helping their children develop any special talents they possess, including musical, athletic, etc. Finally, parents have the opportunity to enjoy spending quality time with their children and create strong parent-child bonds.
However, the home-education method has its serious difficulties, making parents the worst teachers. To begin with, education at home may mean that parents have to be around their children all day long, and this can be difficult when children become restless and misbehave. In this case, parents may be obliged to restrain anger and remain patient when children struggle with learning. It is also difficult to effectively handle the problems of moving at a slower pace than public school instructions, so parents are required to constantly motivate their children. No less difficult is for full-time working parents to spend time reviewing numerous curriculum programs that best suit their children’s learning needs. To make things worse in the future, children who are educated alone at home have less friends and peers, and become selfish and self-centered; and they could have unexpected difficulty in adult life.
To conclude, parents had better believe that the cons weigh the pros of the home-education approach. Therefore, it is important for parents to send their children to school from the start. Before making the decision, parents should remember that they could just turn out to be the worst teachers for a child’s development.
