Essay:
As the popularity of social media sites continuously grows, networks such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram have a huge impact for better or for worse. It is up to people to decide to what extent they allow social media sites to either benefit or harm both individuals and society. The argument is that, when it comes to social networking, its upsides far surpass its downsides.
The positive impact of social media is astronomical in the individual and social context. On the one hand, social networking has changed how an individual interacts with another individual anywhere, at any time on any electronic device in everyone’s hands. Among other good points, it encourages self-expression and could serve as a creative outlet for individuals to express themselves and share their likes. On the other hand, with loads of information being disseminated over the Internet, social media has become a phenomenon as being the very fabric upon which the modern society is being built. As more people from all age demographics begin to log in to this phenomenon, social networks have evolved from being a handy means for keeping in touch with friends and family to being socially used in education, business, politics, careers, and more.
Although social media can be extremely beneficial to both individuals and society, too much of a good thing might lead to negative effects, particularly addiction.. For an individual, heavy social media use might be correlated to lower self-control, which means there is possible risk of addiction. According to new research, addictive habits might be affecting one’s brain more than one knows. As examples, excessive social media usage might prevent one from thinking independently, divert the focus and attention from a particular task, cause anxiety along with depression, and spend more time online and less time talking to a person face to face. Meanwhile, it is true that, if not carefully controlled, social networking might bring several online dangers which sometimes make the society at large vulnerable to crimes. More obvious types include cyber bullying, online harassment, hacking, leaking sensitive information, fake news, and identity theft.
On balance, social media has much more advantages than drawbacks, as revealed in this article. However, it depends on each individual as well as society as to use social sites wisely and at the same time to avoid falling victims to online dangers. One thing is sure: social networking being good or bad, there is no turning back.
