谢振礼 作文批改 Example Essay by Jeenn Lee Hsieh:
There are more advantages than disadvantages if people are free to build their houses and officies of beauty, and
restrictions should apply only when the construction design might harm the harmony of landscape urbanism.
Urban buildings may be as stylish and unique in variety as they can be, but together they should be in unity and
should not look out of place. Cities should not restrict constructions that are so designed as to balance unity and
variety in harmony.
To begin with, it is important to be aware that unity is beauty, referring to the visual quality of wholeness in a city.
Without unity, the urban landscape may look chaotic and anything but beautiful. This happens to some big cities in China, for example. The economic boom in the past several decades has coincided with the boom in the
construction of eye-catching buildings that seem to be devoid of harmony. In view of this, new guidelines
introduced by the government on urban planning will forbid the construction of bizarre and odd-shaped buildings;
and, by laying down rules and conditions, Chinese architecture will officially be less weird and more harmonious. In short, when designing a city's landscape, the perception of oneness or belonging together should not be ignored.
Speaking of landscape urbanism, variety is the complement to unity since variety makes a city look different,
interesting, and beautiful, all contributing to harmony. From this perspective, with unnecessary restrictions on
variety regarding fancy and fashionable buildings, the urban landscape may look just dull. boring and
uninteresting. Good designers know that variety can be achieved through combining such elements as sizes,
materials, colors, lines, shapes, and functionalities. In the future, the image of a harmonious city may be that of
variety in unity. That is to say, there will be classy houses and offices which are different enough to create a visual
interest and which are alike enough to fit together in the same landscape at the same time. After all, variety is
beauty, and this is probably why some cities do not restrict how fancy can be buildings that people construct.
To sum up, restrictions regarding constructions may be unnecessary unless unity and variety are out of harmony.
An urban landscape is most beautiful when all constructions are in harmony. Understanding that beauty is variety
in unity as well as unity in variety, there should be no restrictions whatever on finding expressions in beauty. (Essay
