The full picture of some of the issues associated with illegal drugs, such as heroine and cocaine, is worse than most imagine. These days, it seems that substance abuse problems in many societies have reached a critical point where there is no turning back. While the causes and effects of such problems are clear enough, effective solutions remain anything but easy.
People abuse drugs for many causes, and always the effects are irregular behaviors and actions. Typical reasons include depression, insecurity, grief, despair, immaturity, unemployment, peer pressure, mental illness, ignorance, bad dieting, and poor coping skills. In general, people become dependent on substance in response to these causes, not being fully aware that intentional overuse of drugs can be out of control, in terms of individuals and the society as a whole. On the one hand, the impact of drug abuse and dependence can be far-reaching, affecting almost every organ in the human body and every area of life. On the other hand, dealers and over-users of illegal substance are likely to get involved in violent crimes in the society. This can be seen in the fact that drug offenders generally account for more than one-third of prison populations.
Drug abuse solutions can be viewed from various perspectives. To begin with, prevention is better than cure, and this adage holds good in avoiding drug abuse, too. For example, public education campaigns and stricter laws regarding use of substance and drug trafficking are the measures that have been widely, although not successfully, adopted. Further, more institutions and organizations should be established to help drug abusers to kick the habit, while the police and judicial system must do their jobs to stop the drug epidemic. Also, the support of friends and family is of prime importance, in the hope that an abuser would be committed to giving up hard substance. Finally, it goes without saying that doctors and counselors must be a greatest ally, offering early intervention and timely treatment.
In sum, it is not difficult to understand some drug-related problems, but effective solutions seem to be far from being fruitful and effective. Hopefully, more should be done among all sectors concerned to revert the losing battle against drug abuse. The situation is bad; and should solutions fail, it might get even worse in the coming years. (Essay by Jeenn Lee Hsiehielts360toefl@hotmail.com essay correction)
