The term "environmentally-friendly¨or ¨eco-friendly¨ is a easy drum to beat, but human steps in response to avoid pollution and environmental damage are too late and too slow. After decades of rapid economic development, we have nearly become victims of our own success. Pollution is increasingly threatening public health, and the planet on which we live is not as safe as it used to be.
Pollution, as a byproduct of societies growing in prosperity, takes various forms when affecting our health. Contributing to health problems (and a lower quality of life) are the air we breathe, the water we drink, the land where we grow our food, the increasing noise we hear everyday, and even the light we overuse. Altogether, these factors are harmful to human health in different ways and to different degrees. It may be that, in the face of excessive consumerism, the negative effects of pollution are almost inevitable. Studies show that many modern diseases that we know today are closely related to air, water, soil, noise and light pollution. Perhaps, we are aware that public health is increasingly in danger, but being aware of the health risks alone does not safeguard human health, unless individuals, organizations and governments join hands to seek effective solutions, and that quickly.
Human activity is harming our planet by overusing its non-renewable resources as people in many parts of the world continue to favor economic growth over conservation of natural resources. In fact, saving the planet is not an issue anymore but a survival truth. This means that economic prosperity can backfire if we do not take an eco-friendly approach towards the nature by reducing fossil fuel consumption, logging, illegal fishing, habitat destruction, land degradation, and of course greenhouse gas (from air pollution). Accordingly, to avoid major disasters like global warming that is causing climate to change, we need to protect what is left of our planet and to stop the future from being wiped out before it is time for curtain call. But this is easier said than done if our economy is expected to grow only at the expense at the mother nature. Therefore, it is questionable whether or not we are able to balance economic growth with environmental conservation.
Partly from pollution and partly from environmental damage, our health is being threatened and our planet is being harmed. Looking at the environmental problems in plenty, we are wondering if economic progress is always good. Whatever, we might as well keep beating the drum calling for joint efforts from all sectors to save the planet and all that is living on it.
