When with determination people work hard, they are just preparing the road to a successful life because there is more to success than simply getting ourselves well prepared, hoping for a good opportunity. More often than not, huge achievements have a lot to do with good luck which is a matter of preparation meeting opportunity. Our argument is that when people succeed, it is due to not only good preparation but also good opportunity (plus of course a little talent).
On the one hand, some people think that there is no better secret to making dreams into realities than the result of toil and patience. That is to say, there is a distance between desires and achievements, and the distance can be traveled through hard work and determination, rather than through luck. To make this case, being lucky has little to do with success. Thus, those are true believers in hard work who are determined to beat hard luck with hard work. They are convinced that the harder they work, and the more dedicated they are to their work, the luckier they would become, and therefore the more successful they are likely to be. To put it in another way, if we realized how much sweat and patience was required for success, we would never call a successful person "lucky" again!
On the other hand, some believe that everything in life is nothing but luck--either good luck or bad luck. Based on this belief, a lucky person is one with sufficient talent (or brains) who meets the right opportunity at the right place at the right time. This makes sense, too, when considering that indeed it is a pity that doing one's best does not always answer. It can also be seen that there were people trying and trying and never giving up, only to fail miserably in the end. For example, one who works hard enough may achieve to a certain level, such as getting a highly-paid professorship or a BMW, but one needs a bit of luck put together with brains for getting a great success like a Nobel Prize or a private jet. Ironically, so important is luck that, when luck is on one's side, one might be successful without neither hard work nor good brains.
Hard work matters to success, to be sure; but luck plays no small a part in making success happen. There are times when we are inclined to believe that diligence is the mother of luck, while there are other times when we prefer to think that success depends largely on the appearance of opportunity. A typical question remains: what if preparation would not meet opportunity? (Essay created by Jeenn Lee Hsiehielts360toefl@hotmail.com pigai zuowen)
