It seems that schools might be in love with computers almost at first sight, and apparently the romance will continue. Figuratively speaking, by mid-century the only book for students and educators alike might be the computer's look. As computers become increasingly "sexy", just guess what would students do to learn and what would educators do to teach in the decades to come?
Today's students are so attracted by the computer (and along with it the Internet) that they nearly live with it during both school time and non-school hours. It is expected that the addiction to technology would probably not decline but would rise during their lifespans. By 2050, learning can happen almost anywhere, any time of the day, any time of the week. And, year after year this change will pick up steam, so much so that what is odd will gradually become norm. Not to mention other examples, already two movements of this kind are occurring that are re-shaping school learning--assessment for learning and differentiated instruction. The guess is that both these movements are sleeping into schools as pedagogy because students are able to contact a world of technological possibilities outside classrooms and beyond homework.
The next guess: what role will teachers play in classrooms, now that much of students' study process may be computerized? While it is possible that, decades from now, teachers will still have a place in education, it is impossible that that role is not in for a dramatic change between the present and 2050. Such technological transformation in pedagogy is inevitable not only for students but also for educators. This means that teachers might more and more combine face-to-face instructions with online orientations for better efficiency. For example, popular platforms like text messaging and social networks like Facebook will become ubiquitous, with students empowered to learn on their own together with coaching from teachers. That is to say, by mid-century, whereas students will become rather self-directed learners, teachers will become other-directed facilitators--tutoring students as they build their own projects and time schedules.
When technology advances at the present speed or even faster, the use of the computer as a learning and teaching tool is likely to re-define education. Now the beginning of the end of printed information is here, that end cannot be very far behind. Judging from the great influence of technology on schools, the romance will go on beyond 2050, although it is too early to envision that the two would live happily forever as if in a fairy tale.
