  IELTS Essay Topic:

  >Children nowadays prefer electronic games to other games and toys. Why is it happening? Is it a positive or negative trend?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

  Writing Example (Jeenn Lee Hsieh):

The high sales of electronic games is a reflection of consumers' buying power, but it does not mean that other types of games are going out of business anytime soon. What has been happening is that the potential market of traditional toys looks like shrinking as many children nowadays would prefer playing electronic games. Two factors in particular contribute to this development: No.1--electronic toys are getting cheaper; and No. 2-- today's chldren are becoming more sophisticated.

Naturally, children feel delighted in playing their favorite toys, and the current mainstream is unmistakably going electronic. It is a fact that a growing number of products are utilizing electronic aspects to strengthen playability. This may explain why global brands are investing strongly in mass-producing responsive and interactive toys. From any point of view, interactivity with such media as the Internet and television is set to increase, usually not involving extra costs. Since prices matter, it is safe to predict that, although cheap traditional toys can still have a place in the market, electronic games at affordable prices are no doubt gaining grounds. Were electronic games too expensive, consumers would probably think twice before making a purchase.

Modern children tend to be pre-mature regarding what to play with, which may underly the phenomenon that the retail landscape for toys has shifted from traditonal games to electronic games. Interestingly enough, many young parents are almost as enthusiastic about electronic games as their kids. In fact, the two generations share the fun of playing together as if they were peers. This is of course a positive trend in terms of the parent-child emotional relationship. In comparison, traditional toys have mostly been designed and made for educational purposes. So, when it comes to seeking sophisticated entertainment, nothing can beat electronic games. Nevertheless, a variety of "nostalgic" toys remain popular among smaller boys and girls, indicating that sales in this category may be down to some extent but far from being out.

As interactive games are becoming less expensive and as children are becoming more sophisticated, parents choose to buy whatever please their children. The issue is not about the advantages versus disadvantages between electronic games and classic toys. Rathert, it is about those children who happen to be born in this Electronic Age, long, long, long after the Stone Age. (Jeenn Lee Hsieh ielts360toefl@hotmail.com pigai zuowen)
