In today's world, it is important for young people to be informed about what is happening on the planet and beyond; however, there is no need to teach international news at the secondary institutions. Now that news of all kinds is available 24/7, to include international news as one of the subjects of study is a waste of school time. For that matter alone, the disadvantages would outweigh the benefits.
There are obvious benefits to studying international news at school. For example, this subject may be regarded as a means to encourage students to be constantly aware of the changing world. It is because that major international events are shaping the global political landscape, directly or indirectly influencing people's lives. Further, studying world news regularly is a basis for learning citizenship life skills and political literacy. At this point, it may be said that those who are not well-informed are not likely to think critically and have their own opinions relevant to history in the making. To put it in another way, the more high school students are interested in international news, the better they are prepared for their adult lives.
Nevertheless, the chief problem is limited school time for students to study international news as a school subject. According to the weekly schedule, schools ought to focus on core subjects, such as mathematics, natural sciences, social sciences, the arts, physical exercise, and technology. In analysis, just because information about international news is important, it does not mean that this subject should become a key learning area at school, even if time were permitted. Outside the classroom, students can learn international news on television, on radio and online, along with printed circulations. Perhaps there may be another drawback about having international news as a school subject: who would teach that subject the way BBC or CNN is podcasting? Think about this: all teachers are not journalists, are they?
In sum, the issue is a new idea but a bad idea. What with the usually tight school schedule on weekdays, and what with the easy access to the world news information anytime, it is clear that students need not study international events at school. After all, it may be wrong to turn a classroom into a newsroom. (Essay created by Jeenn Lee Hsieh)
