Issues related to the ethnic diversity vary from country to country, covering such cultural differences as race, language, and above all, religion. A mixture of people from different ethnic groups, large and small, should be considered as positive if the idea of "unity in diversity" can prevail. However, if nothing else, the religious friction alone is enough to start negatively a chain of social and economic problems.
On the national as well as international level, religious beliefs tend to be polarized, leading to social unrest. In a religiously divided society, the basic question is "who are you?" Regarding this kind of cultural difference, unity is neither said nor done because people could not change their religions as easily as they would adopt a new language. For example, a person can be half French and half Saudi arab and at the same time be a citizen of both countries; nevertheless, it is difficult to be half Catholic and half Muslim. In other words, it is highly unlikely that Muslim will become Catholic or vice versa. This phenomenon of religious diversity may render social stability next to impossible.
Seemingly in an indirect way, the religious conflict affects economic growth. It is partly because social unrest implies an increase of uncertainty and therefore could lead to a reduction of the investment rate and could even transform into a political or armed conflict. Besides, there would be a loss of communication among employers and employees when they take the religious issue too seriously in the workplaces. And this in turn could slow down the diffusion of productive spirit and technological innovations that are essential to economic growth. It may be argued that, in the economic context, there is no such thing as religious unity in ethnic diversity. That is to say, the religious conflict does not contribute to the society's economic health.
In the perspective of the extreme religious difference, the ethnic diversity could turn out to be harmful to a country's social and economic stability. The key to national and international harmony, if possible at all, must necessarily lie in a high degree of mutual understanding and mutual respect. Fortunately, however, in a world being increasingly globalized, it is hoped that both ethnic majorities and minorities are learning to live with more open minds.
