大学排名有局限，参考排名的时候，请注意参考大学排名的迷局。当然，顶级大学和后面的大学之间的差距还是很明显的。而且要注意到USNEWS是纯粹按照大学自己提交的数据来做排名的。考虑到数据有可能作假和虚报，怕名的可靠程度其实也是有一定的问题的。比如之前南加州大学工学院的排名就受到质疑。
正如华尔街日报中文网所评价的一样：
《美国新闻与世界报道》的年度排名仍然是最有影响力的高校排行榜，它的引人注目和方法长期以来也一直存在争议。批评者认为，这份排行榜导致大学大搞“数字游戏”。一些高校管理人员承认，在接受调查时采取过降低竞争对手声望打分的策略，还有一些人拒绝同该杂志合作。
《美国新闻与世界报道》没有披露其计算大学分数的公式，并拒绝计算民意调查和其他数据的“误差幅度”。大多数民意调查都考虑误差幅度，这将使学校与排名之间存在更强的统计关系。|
