The good: my baby loves puppies and so she does enjoy looking through this book and touching the different textures.
The bad: it is fairly short for the price, some of the 'textures' are lackluster (a 'shiny' collar that is the same as the background of the page and really isn't a texture - the 'bumpy' paws should have been sandpaper or something really rough but instead they are lightly bumpy cardboard and I don't know if the baby would really get the meaning of 'bumpy' from that), but the worst thing is the vocabulary! For such a short book there are some really dumb words in there that are not very educational. The ears are 'shaggy' - what 6 month old or even 3 year old needs to learn 'shaggy' as an adjective? Couldn't they use something more common? And the nose is 'squashy' - that is not a word I would ever use to describe anything. 'Squishy' is a valid word so every time we read it I have to substitute 'squishy'... for those reasons I rated this a 3 star.
The book is adorable. However...
It was advertised as in "Condition: Used - Good - MINOR WEAR from storage and/or use. Eligible for Amazon Prime. 100% Satisfaction guaranteed!" The book I received is in poor condition. It's usable but the binding is completely separated from the pages of the book, and I guarantee my 18 month old will break this book quickly. Disappointed in this misrepresentation of the book.
This is my son's favorite book, and we have gone through one already. He likes to sleep with it, play with it, and ultimately destroy it. It is a cute little story, with textures for my son to feel and play with. It is pretty durable, he is just really destructive. I wish it came in a rubber format because then he couldn't destroy it as much, but if I keep buying used copies, I can always have one waiting in the wings.
My daughter really liked these books, starting at the age of six months. She loves the different textures on the various pages, and the pictures keep her interested. My complaint would be that there is very little unique among the books in this series. She loved "That's not my bunny ..." and so I bought this one, and there really is very little difference between them.
This is one of my go to baby shower gifts for new moms. This series of books is the BEST for having your kiddo play with different textures. It's also very sturdy and the pages are easier to turn than a lot of other board books, which is a big plus for babies. I've had trouble finding these in most bookstores, Barnes and Noble sometimes has them and our local drugstore carries them (very random).
Yes, the book is short, yes, there isn't much of a plot. Both of these things make it perfect for babies.
We own this one and the dragon one. Both are ridiculously cute.
