I am a Hyperion consultant and I am happy to write the review of ' Getting started with Oracle Hyperion Planning'. I can say one thing very confidently that this book is a great resource for beginners, go for it. This is not a typical user guide or and admin guide, which we already have it in Oracle websites. I know there are other books ' Look smarter than you are with Hyperion Planning'. But, they are admin and user guides again. I was looking for some book, which explains the basics and also gives me a feel of implementation and this is the right book for that.
The author has done a great job explaining various Planning concepts. I enjoyed reading this book thoroughly and it is the best material I have seen in Hyperion Planning .
Let me reiterate that it's the best book for beginners.
Author i.e. Sandeep Reddy Enti is a known personality in Oracle forums and am very glad that he did not disappoint this time with his book. Good Job and I would like to see your writing more books in Hyperion space. We need more of these.
The book is full of examples and screenshot guiding the reader along. Author had done an amazing job in ensuring that the reader not only understands the concepts of Planning by reading but also will create Planning applications on his laptop and work on them. This is what I consider is the best part of the book. Following the book, reader will end up creating 3 to 4 Planning applications all by themselves right from metadata loading to advanced workflow creations.
Fact of the matter is that many Planning developers and consultants know the product but they don't understand the bigger picture of Planning and budgeting of an Organization. Author had done very good job in explaining the very basic necessity of Budgeting and explained how a product like Oracle Hyperion will help. Sandeep Reddy (Author) has been successful in explaining the chapters by starting with business need or requirement and then making reader work on Planning application and thereby addressing the issues. Also, author did a convincing job in making the conversations (which start every chapter) very interesting with an objective of explaining the real life implementation.
I would strongly recommend this book. It's the best material apart from Oracle documents so far in Hyperion Planning space and my team is benefiting immensely out of this.

I like the part of the book which makes me work on the applications a lot and also explains the functional meaning of hyperion objects. Good Job Sandeep Reddy.

A very good book to start working on Hyperion Planning. I have Essbase experience and am looking to learn Hyperion Planning. This book is a good read which provides functional and techincal information, and explains the application build process step-by-step
One of the worst documents ever written. Spelling and grammar errors on nearly every page. Stocking this high-level garbage reflects poorly on Amazon's quality mission. What a waste of ink & paper.
As someone who doesn't work with the Planning application directly but works on a team that heavily does Planning development, I found this to be a great read. I develop financial reports within my organization and a lot of what I do ties in with Planning. I have never really had a formal breakdown of what the Planning application is etc, so for me reading through the book was an excellent eye-opener and helped me to get a better idea of what some of my other team members do when working with the Planning app.
I saw a review that said the book didn't go into a lot of detail and had grammatical mistakes. First, I was looking at the book for what it was...which is "Getting Started with Oracle Hyperion Planning 11". In other words, I wasn't expecting the book to go into a lot of detail and basically be a guide for a Power User.
Second, despite the grammatical mistakes, I found the information within the book to be fairly helpful. I don't consider myself an expert after reading the book or anything like that but I do think I have a better idea of how the Planning app is used within my organization. I have a better sense of how this software ties in with some of the other Hyperion products that are in use by my organization.
Third, my team does a fair amount of cross-training and I think that the next time the Planning developers start talking about some of the functions that they perform within the software to do certain tasks, it will make more sense for me and should be easier for me to follow along with. In fact, some of the information in the book would make for a great addition to some of the training materials that are used.
Lastly, I recommend that anyone who intends to read this book to try to be somewhat familiar with databases. If you haven't ever worked with a database before or if you're in school and haven't had a class on databases, it could be hard to follow along with what is going on in the book. This is not a dummies' guide to Planning. It also helps to be familiar with some of the other Hyperion products that exist. The Hyperion products are interconnected with one another so if you work with one particular application, it couldn't hurt to try to read something that relates to another product.
