There is no doubt in my mind that Peter and Steven have done some extraordinary things with their lives. This book, however, is not one of them.
There are three parts to the book. Part One covers exponential technology. If you're familiar with AirBnB, and have read an article on Artificial Intelligence, most of this will not be new information to you. Part Two covers the mindset of bold leaders. If you have never read an article about Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk or Richard Branson, you can find those here. Part Three is entirely related to crowdsourcing and crowdfunding. If you have working knowledge of 99Designs, Kiva, or Kickstarter, you're probably all set.
This book is trying very hard to do everything and does not succeed. In fact there are a few blatant errors along the way. On page 126 the authors highlight a glass bottom plane as an industry "first." How did an April Fool's joke make it into this book as fact? They also repeat the same quotation within a few pages of each other. "This isn't just plumbing and pest control. We've got PhDs on the site. I've seen both quantum physics and aerospace jobs handled perfectly." This snippet appears both on page 150 and 158. Who edited this book?
I am a firm believer that in this life I should aim to contribute, rather than criticize. I suppose my contribution is to you, a potential reader, to strongly consider if this book is what you are looking for before you add it to your cart.
Why this book is actually worth the read? Because it offers you a new perspective that is not usually offered. It opens new ideologies that you may have never heard of. Many are disputing that he is just saying stuff that you already know, but trust me. Most of the stuff that he spoke about, I never knew before (And I spend hours reading self-help books and TED talks).
The reality is that if you are not a businessman, entrepreneur (Aspiring or established), or someone who wants to change their life radically (To make a leader out of yourself in the world of business), this book may not be for you. If you are looking for self-improvement to be in a old, dull paradigm (Working a 9-5 job you hate to support the house you need a 9-5 job to support); this book isn't for you. Then you should read another book that gives out lies so that you can feel comfortable in your situation, even though you shouldn't.
This book is for the people who dare say they aren't living the life they want to. This book is for those who need a guide to get from their old lifestyle to a new one. Many people, because they are so dead set on this linear paradigm (And you will learn lots in the book about this), that they give it 2 stars because this book says "Screw that paradigm, you should embrace this new reality".
40 years down the line, this is what business will look like. And the ones who started business this way, 40 years from now, will be the businessmen that aspiring entrepreneurs look up to, like many look up to Richard Branson right now because of his ability to build a grand global corporation from a record company.
Think of not thousands but billions. Maybe be a little unrealistic to think we can all be Steve Jobs and Richard Bansons or go to outer space in our lifetimes but this big ambitious book condenses all these possibilities using cold facts that are true - that the age of exponential impact has arrived.
As an entrepreneur, YouTube creator and writer, I would agree most of the concepts are legit, as even right now when I type about a few thousand people are watching my videos per day, and soon, millions. The stability of bold ideas can impact on a scale never before.
One part of the book confused me - demonetization. Erm, okay, so how we are going to create wealth here? This book doesn't answer this question directly. I guess I have to figure how to sell out my YouTube channel for real bucks one day (this book still left me clueless how to make money out of big ideas).
Still, I give it a five star rating as I began to dream of bigger dreams after reading this book, and my mind has been expanded by its concepts. It's condensed and precise, I would recommend this book to any MBA or business graduate to update and reorientate their mindset to this cloud world we reside in now.
