Young Joe Jefferson is putting off his homework by walking his dog when he tumbles down a long tunnel into a strange world, to which he has been summoned as a warrior-hero. Before he can return home, he must defeat the nefarious Dr. Cuddles. With that as the chief villain's name, it's easy to see that this is not a true Tolkienesque fantasy, though there are plenty of superficial references to the trilogy, from the book's title to the presence of wizard, elf, and dragon characters to the spell that begins One teaspoon to rule them all. The derivations, or tributes, don't stop there. Even the rather original idea of Muddle Earth's enchanted lake that floats high in the air is reminiscent of the floating city, Sanctaphrax, in Stewart and Riddell's long-running Edge Chronicles series. Nicely illustrated throughout with ink drawings, this often-silly fantasy will appeal to that group of readers who are old enough to read a 400-page novel yet young enough to be amused by the many references to underpants. PreSchool-Carlson hits just the right note in this story about a little girl who has to choose between facing frightening things or hiding from them. The outside world includes terrors as varied as a mean-looking dog, bad news stories, and nighttime shadows, but since "hiding under your covers can get pretty boring," this wide-eyed, appealing child ventures out and discovers that the world isn't as scary as it seems. Carlson's style works well to address fear without inspiring it-the colors are characteristically bright and jolly, but there are clashing patterns and hues, the lines are slightly more jagged than usual, and the perspective is sometimes askew. Preschoolers are sure to find the protagonist's worried, but not terrified face a comforting focus on the "scary" pages. PETR HORACEK is a Czech illustrator and painter whose previous books include RUN, MOUSE, RUN!; BIRD, FLY HIGH; A NEW HOUSE FOR MOUSE; STRAWBERRIES ARE RED; and WHEN THE MOON SMILED. Petr Horacek trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and then worked as a graphic designer before moving to England, where he lives with his wife and two daughters.

This book is great in so many ways. My 15 mo. old loves it because it has a fun rhythm to it and because he hunts for little things on each page (the kitty, the dog, the butterflies, the vegetables). I like it because it shows kids how plants grow "Corn grows up. Carrots grow down. Cucumbers climb around and around. Peppers grow up. Potatoes grow down. Pumpkins vine around and around...." I also like that the children are gardening with their dad, and that this is (apparently) an organic garden...happy bugs, butterflies, worms, and birds are shown ALL over the plants (in a cute way, and a real way...not a gross way). At the end the family harvests their veggies and creates a veggie stew. Fabulous, positive book...makes natural gardening look fun, and kids learn about plants, too!
I bought this as a birthday gift for our 2 year old grand niece who loves to "read". Her books are her favorite toys so I knew she would be fascinated with all the wonderful things to see in the beautifully done illustrations. The older kids at the birthday party spent quite a while looking at the book, challenging each other to find all the things in the pictures. Highly recommend this one.
My two-year old granddaughter loves this book. Not so much for the prose but for the illustrations which allow us to point to so many things -- the little girl who looks like her, the little boy who is like her friend, the dog who is like her puppy, the bunny, the daddy, the scarecrow, bare feet, the many kinds of bugs,etc. It takes us a long time to get through the "bug" book but she happily remains still throughout and it is the one she wants read to her at each story time. I hope that the author and the illustrator collaborate again in the future on more children's books.
I liked this book. The rhyming text is good for my preschoolers and the book is not very long. We read it twice and reached up. bent down and twirled around when the words were mentioned. They enjoyed it very much and could remember which vegetables grew which way.
Great book with interesting pictures that provide many learning opportunities. Besides learning about gardening and food you can practice counting and numbers all through the read. All the pictures of the bugs were hilarious from a parent perspective.
