Perfect for building substantial vocabulary. The words are given in many different ways, including definitions, pictures, sentences, and plenty of puzzles and crosswords. In addition, there are challenging assignments which require the student to write a story, using the new words, and to illustrate with a picture.
Well done, and interesting for children. My eight year old enjoys it very much. The words are rich and the lesson structure sets the words in to the memory with easy and complicated assignments..
This book is very helpful for 4th graders.
My 9 year old loves these books. It keeps her busy during the summer and ready for the next grade level when school starts. Fast delivery.
I use this as a part of our homeschooling for my 4th grader. The vocabularies introduced in each section is only about 8 words, but they are good words for advanced reader--words they often hear or see, but have not yet learned officially (for example, "frivolous" or "subscription", but mixed enough with easier words like "apartment" and "gale").
The activities includes crossword puzzles, word search, match the definitions to the words, fill in the blanks to make sense of a story, write your own story, and comprehension questions. I think most of the activities are good for learning, and my 9-year-old enjoys them, too.
However, the biggest problem I have with this workbook is that there is no word list at the beginning of each section. You have to skim through a few pages to find out what words we are supposed to be learning in that section. In many sections, activities start without presenting the words we are supposed to learn. For example, the first activity of the book was a word search, but it only gave definitions and no words. My child (and I) couldn't figure out just from the definitions (because there are synonyms that fit the answer too), and had to look ahead to figure out which words we are supposed to be searching.
Also, there is no clear beginning and end to each vocabulary section. Same 8 vocabularies are being taught in several pages in a row (6 or so pages), but since there is no word list, it seems like a new set of words suddenly start. If you and your child like to jump around from one activity to another, then you probably wouldn't care about this. But, since we use this for out schooling, not having clear organization slows us down, and I have to do more planning ahead.
In a nutshell, very good supplementary workbook for a 4th grader who is an avid reader. Just know that organization takes the stars away from being 4 or 5 stars.
