Still,old habits die hard.Friedman said he makes sure hisemployees are issued businesscards,which sometimes comein handy at conferences.Otherfirms that do business abroad,particularly in Asia,have found printed business cards to be crucial to corporate culture andritual there.
And although the number of U.S.print shopsis declining,some are thriving with the helpof ecommerce and innovative new designs.Online printer MOO Inc.specializes in "minicards" that are half the standard size to appeal toeco-conscious entrepreneurs.Others are peddlingplastic business cards equipped with flashdrives that companies can hand out aspromotional freebies.
A changing culture
Jean Twenge,author of the book "GenerationMe," said that business cards won't disappearcompletely until a near-perfect replacement isdeveloped.Young adults,she said,tend not to seework as central to their identity,and they're lessinterested in tradition and ritual.
"We're less formal now," Twenge said."Peopleused to call their boss'Mr.Smith.'Now they calltheir boss'John'."
"The generational shift makes sense.This ishow cultural change happens."
At 36,Ralph Barbagallo is near the cutoff forGeneration Y but despises business cards all the same.A mobile game developer from California,Barbagallo said he goes to three major conferences a year and has to distribute paper cards.But lugging and exchanging fistfuls of them is apain,he said,and it's hard toremember who is who.
"When they run outthis time,I'm not printingany more," he said."I'm goingto force the issue and comeup with a solution.They needto die somehow."
