内容简介 This A-Z encyclopaedia offers information on a wide range of subjects and contains cross-references in the text and a comprehensive index to help the reader trace further information about any topic. Many areas of knowledge are covered, from plants, science, travel, the human body and politics to food, language, religion, sports, history, machines, and myths and space. Throughout the encyclopaedia important topics, such a communication, dinosaurs or the Internet, are presented through double-page spreads. there are also country panels that provide maps, flags and checklists of information about the countries of the world.
媒体推荐 This excellent encyclopedia for adults and older children covers a huge range of topics with clarity, aided by accessible language and a wealth of colour illustrations. Its particular strengths are the entries on politics, science and history and it's carefully cross-referenced, encouraging further research. Particularly impressive is the editor's effort to make this an 'up-to-the-minute' reference guide. Always objective, the encyclopedia nonetheless tackles controversial issues such as the 'War on Terrorism' and over-fishing in the North Sea. All entries are delivered in crisp prose, clarifying difficult concepts like communism or relativity with ease. The full-colour illustrations are of a high standard. Young readers will enjoy the many cross-section diagrams: Tutankhamen's tomb, a cruise ship and a volcano are all peeled away layer by layer. Large, bold illustrations accompany the special features, complementing text which might otherwise prove too dense for some readers. On the whole, the geographical entries are detailed and useful. Mini 'country files' provide quick access to the essential facts. One casualty of this is Niger, which is muddled together with Nigeria: this could prove confusing or irritating. Similarly, world religions were all included although Christianity and churches gain more coverage than other faiths or places of worship. The encyclopedia contains over 1,500 entries, almost all of which are clear and coherently edited. With its cross-referencing, recommended websites and lucid index, this encyclopedia encourages active learning and will prove a handy reference tool for any classroom or family. (Kirkus UK)
